What is PLEXR?
Plexr Plus (or plasma soft surgery) is a non-surgical procedure that lifts the eyes (blepharoplasty) by addressing skin laxity. It is also used to treat scars, moles, skin tags, and other superficial skin problems. Plexr Plus, unlike surgical treatments for these conditions, does not require a general anesthetic and has a substantially quicker recovery period.
The treatment involves plasma, the fourth state of matter after solid, liquid, and gas, and is carried out with wireless handheld devices made in Italy. Over the past decade, the Plexr Plus Soft Surgery equipment has been used and licensed in a number of countries around the world. It is the first completely licensed plasma technology to be introduced into Canada.
Lasers, chemical peels, light-based energy, radiofrequency, and dermabrasion are some of the most common ablative and nonablative techniques utilized for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation in recent decades. Each has unique characteristics, as well as advantages and downsides.
One of the most recent technological advancements in this field is the use of plasma energy to alter skin surface and architecture. Plasma energy has the potential to bridge the gap between ablative and nonablative energies.
Plexr Plus is a cordless micro-surgical hand operated device that transfers concentrated heat to the treated skin tissues. It uses the difference in voltage between the device and the patient’s skin. The difference in voltage generates a small electrical arc, similar to a minute lighting. The small lighting causes sublimation of the fluids contained in the superficial part of the skin, without unwanted heat transmission to the adjacent tissues. Additionally, it acts on the superficial layer of the skin preserving the lower layers; this will reduce drastically any potential permanent skin damage that could be caused by the misuse of conventional lasers.
Electrosurgical unit and Plexr Plus have different intended use. Plexr Plus is not intended to cut the tissue, but to generate retraction and perform gentle skin lesion removals sublimating layer by layer of the skin. Plexr Plus is non aggressive and does not create scars as we often see with electrosurgery but actually renews the tissue, because the parameters and the modality to generate the ark are different.
Electrosurgical units/radio scalpels use more power and frequency and typically require a return pad electrode. Plexr Plus, with its lower power and voltage frequency, does not require the returning pad, and the action can surely be considered. Plasma is a gas that has been ionized due to a voltage differential. It is critical to distinguish the name of the technology in order to avoid confusion with the collateral impact produced by an electrosurgical unit.

Plexr Plus ionizes the air between the tip and the body, generating a direct plasma on the skin using primarily the heat effect, but it is more precise, selective, and superficial, causing no damage to the deep layers of the skin (dermis), only the surface epidermis.
The Plexr Plus device generates plasma by ionizing gas particles between its precision 0.5mm-wide probe and the skin, resulting in an electrical arc. The technology is extremely precise, allowing particular areas such as the eyelids to be treated without touching or damaging the skin.
Plasma is referred to as "a lightning bolt". When lightning strikes the ground, it vaporizes everything, leaving just black carbon. Plasma vaporizes cells on the skin, leaving behind a crust of carbon. This crust cures and leaves the treated skin behind. In addition to vaporizing - or "sublimating" - undesirable skin, it has the triple effect of tightening the remaining tissues and increasing collagen formation.
Plexr Plus offers a wide variety of applications. The most common procedure is non-surgical blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), however it can also be used to treat wrinkles/rhytids, superficial skin blemishes, scars, acne, and keloid scars.
What to Expect?
Treatment can usually be done in 10 to 40 minutes, depending on the area. Patients have reported some procedures using Plexr Plus as being painless with the anesthetic cream, but treatment area of the eye area may still have a level of discomfort and it may feel prickly.
